To make money with your computer, it's unavoidable: you have to have a website. Your own address online is the only way that your virtual business will be recognized as legitimate. In fact, some people make money off their website alone. It is possible.

No matter what you're selling – crafts, your skills, or advertising – your website must look professional. These means you need to stay away from the free website offers. Little flashing graphics, slow loading, long URLs that include the company's name – all of this makes you look amateurish and unprofessional. You could offer the best, most inexpensive necessary item that everyone and their dog needs, but if it doesn't look like you know what you're doing, then no one will buy your product.

Choosing a web hosting company is a big decision and not an easy one to make. Take full advantage of the sales department of the web hosting companies you check out. Be very clear about what you need for your site. Some examples of what your company may need in a web hosting company include:

* Lots of bandwidth
* Email system
* Email forwarding
* Email auto responders
* Frequent backups of information

Next, choose a website address and register it. You may need to insert dashes in order to get the name of your business in the website address, but you do want to keep it short. You may consider using keywords that associate with what you have to offer in your title. If you sell only batteries, then batteries.com or buy-batteries.com or cheapbatteries.com will all be easy for customers to remember but not to long to mis-type.

Choose a style, a tone for your business. Are you zippy and fun? Use bright colors. Are you elegant and refined? Use subdued colors, classic accents and minimalist style. Simple things like graphics, font, background colors, and the amount of information on each page help to give the customer an impression of who you and your business are, what you have to offer, and the method in which you will deliver your goods.

You can design your website yourself or hire a website designer. There are many companies online who offer services in which you can just click and create your website. They usually offer hosting as well. These may be a good way to go, but you may not have as much control over the details of your site's design the way you would if you designed it using a WYSIWIG software program like Frontpage. Frontpage is extremely easy to use and many of the click and create website companies are compatible with Frontpage, so you can combine the two if you like.

It's easy to learn the basics of website building. There are a variety of beginner's manuals available that will set you up with all you need to know to get off to a successful start. The Idiot's guides and Dummies guides both provide easy to use manuals on website building. Pick one and get busy!
