He didn't tell anyone that side of it, however. He started his Security Exchange Company and promised investors that they would make a fifty percent profit in 90 days. Thousands of people gave him approximately $300 each. He was able to make this kind of money from so many people by successfully duping them into believing in the legitimacy of the profits for one simple reason - early investors actually made that kind of money. They were simply paid off by the money flowing in from the payments of later investors. A year later, Carlo Ponzi was worth millions.
It wasn't much later, though, that things started to come apart for Ponzi's networking marketing home business scheme. Law enforcement authorities began investigating and his scheme got some unwanted media attention as well.
Investors started asking for their money back and he paid back about 1000 would be profiteers, but the cost of returning the money bankrupted his network marketing home business.
