Sacrificing Sensitivity to Come Home

Every choice demands a sacrifice. If you want to earn some money, you have to sacrifice time, energy, and sweat. If you want to lose some weight, you sacrifice time, energy, and money sometimes. If you want to get a head, you sacrifice time and energy. Anyone see a trend here? Many workers in our world dream of coming home to work full time from their own home office. But few understand the full sacrifice of what they will give up in the office. Who wants to leave that burnt, free coffee behind?

Those who choose to come home will miss out on the social opportunity of that exist with those exciting and mandatory staff meetings. After all, who doesn't want to hear the same thing repeated that they just read in the 20 interoffice memos printed last week? You will probably have to make your own coffee as well, and thus you have one more task added to your list.

Coming home takes work. You will give up much when you leave the traditional office: Sweaty, anxiety-filled meetings, uncomfortable, boring sensitivity training, not to mention the adrenaline rush that comes from screwing up. Consider these things intensely when you decide to choose whether or not to come home for work. The home business will offer some rewards. If it didn't, then everyone would stay at the office.

Home Businesses and the Second Income

Who couldn't use a little more cash? Our society has found various ways to earn that cash. We can steal it, but the consequence is far greater than the payoff. We can find an extra job, but many shun the idea of slapping that pizza delivery light on top of their car. Or we could start our own home business. Now there's an idea. The second income makes sense for a variety of individuals.

For example, let's say Joe has a medical bill he needs to pay off, and the hospital or clinic has been nagging him. How can he get them off his back? He could easily pick up an extra job or two in the neighborhood. Maybe he wants to consider mowing for an other family or another manual labor job. Maybe he's a tech genuius and can help clean up the neighbor hood's computer or install the necessary spyware or virus protection programs. With just a few fliers that he prints off his home computer and printer, he can quickly open his own business and earn the extra cash that he needs. Maybe he wants to even market his skill with some freebies from the start. For example, he could offer to mow the neighbor's yard for free under the contingency that the neighbor consider hiring him full time. Then he works his tail off to make the lawn look fantastic so he can market himself effectively.

Or maybe we should look at Sally. Sally is a stay-at-home mom whose kids are small enough that she cannot leave them at home. She has done the figuring, and discovered that daycare and work clothes will cost her just as much as her job would earn her. A home business will work well for her. She does not have to pay for daycare, and she has to invest little in work clothes. She can do the same thing that Joe did. She can consider what she does well, and then do that for others for money. She may want to watch kids for some extra cash or clean houses. A variety of opportunities exist for the creative entrepreneur.

The home business can also create a second income for the enterprising family as a whole that chooses to work together. For example, the Smith family has the dream of going on a vacation . . . to London. They decide to work together as a family, and thus they create their own home business corporation. The teen boys open a lawn mowing business, the adolescent daughter opens a baby-sitting business, and Dad and Mom start their own business of data entry for an online company. Everyone works together at the home business and sacrifice their time and energy for a time and for a common goal. Within a year, Mom is taking a picture of Dad and the kids in front of Big Ben.

The home business has great potential in our society. Working men and women appreciate those who work hard and market their skills effectively. Furthermore, the advancement of our society has left us with little jobs that few people have time to complete. We often to refer to our meals as the account we land, but if for some home businesses, families can literally eat the profits Those who cannot manage their home businesses well often find themselves wondering where the profits went, and will over look the eight-dollar t-bone staring them in the face. How can home businesses keep from eating their profits.
First and foremost, the home business owner must keep his business funds separate from his home funds. He must establish a separate checking account altogether. "But that's too much work!" some whine.

Tough. Deal with it. When you absorb your business expenses and income into your home checking account, you manage your business finances poorly. You have no way of determining what your profit is if you're making a profit at all. So first and foremost, establish a separate account where you will deposit all business income and from where you will pay all business expenses.

Pay yourself from this business account. However, do not empty the account to pay yourself. If you do this, you are your most expensive employee, and you should fire yourself or shut down the business. When you pay yourself, do not take home the full hundred percent of the paycheck. Instead, deduct 25 percent of the paycheck and set it aside in a separate account, like a savings account, for taxes. Those who neglect to set money aside for taxes often do not have taxes. Plan for taxes. They should surprise no one when they roll around every quarter.

Learn to live and work within your means. The basic concept of money management lies on the principle that one never spends more than he earns. Figure out an estimated monthly income, and then spend that income on paper before you let the dollar bills slip through your fingers.

This means at home writing down all of your expenses, including anticipated expenses such as dentist bills, gifts, and car repairs. When you have the expenses and savings amounts written down, they should equal your take home pay. If they do not, adjust them so that they do, and learn to live within that budget. Then do the same at work. Learn to operate your business within the framework of your written budget. If you need someone to be accountable to, consider hiring an accountant that can help you with the budgeting process or recruit a friend that will go through the numbers with you.

Those who learn to manage their money wisely, both at home and with their home business, will always find themselves on top. No longer will you be eating Joe Smith's account on the grill or Sheila Jones' smothered with butter and sprinkled with paprika. Instead, you will find yourself savoring the profits that you know you have.

The Dragon in the Office

So you hate your job and want to come home. You're tired of hearing about your son's latest soccer game or your daughter's most recent ballet recital instead of seeing the goals and the pirouettes yourself. How can you fix this? Come home. Nearly every home business idea has the potential to become a family friendly adventure, but a few tips will help keep it family friendly. After all, who says you can't go home?

Finally, take breaks: This goes right along with boundaries. If your daughter has a ballet recital, consider shutting the business down for that hour or two to attend the recital. Remember the that you came home in the first place: to spend time with family while earning a living. Whenever you do plan on leaving the office early, let your customers know why you are not answering the phone, because reliability is a key to success in the home business world. However, if you cannot find a way to indeed spend time with your family, nothing has changed except your place of business.

Many traditional office workers move home and start their own home business to leave the dragon of a job that has been breathing fire into their lives and join the princes and princesses in the valley of the home business world. However, when they fail to remember why they came home in the first place, the dragon will follow the worker home. The home business does not have to be the dragon that swallows the family whole. Reliability Counts

When we think of reliability and business, we marry the two terms with images like our grandmother who always had cookies in her cookie jar or our teacher who always gave us a scowl when we passed a note in class.

Figures of authority sprout respect from the masses because of their reliability. They are where they should be when we need them, they do what they say they'll do, and they model self discipline like no other figure. They are reliable. First and foremost, a reliable home business owner will keep regular hours. He will establish and maintain these boundaries if he wants to first of all be reliable to his customers and second of all be reliable to his family. If he first of all establishes when he will answer his phone and when he will work, both his family and customers will know when they can best contact him and do their said business with him. Even if he has a cell phone as his business phone, the reliable home business owner will not answer it outside of business hours. The moment he chooses to answer that phone whenever he wishes, he has crossed the boundary and is no longer reliable to his family.

Secondly, the successful home business owner understands the importance of keeping his word. If he makes a promise, either to his family or his clients, he must keep that promise. When he understands the grave consequence of not keeping a promise, he will weigh his decision more when he has to promise to complete a task in a given amount of time. For example, if a client asks the home business owner to fulfill a contract by a given time, the home business owner should first check his current contracts along with his family's schedule. Once he has determined that he has enough time to fulfill the contract, only then should he promise to do so. He should not make the promise and then try to carve out that time. After all, we all only have 24 hours in a day. We cannot create more time. And when we choose to take a contract that stretches us, we steal time from someone or somewhere else, usually our families.

Finally, a successful home business owner understands that his reliability depends large on his self-discipline. To work from home requires self-discipline because the home is rarely the ideal work environment. Distractions abound. Corporations spend millions of dollars a year on productivity studies to ensure that they have the perfect work environment. They set thermostats at specific temperatures and minimize ambient noise so their workers can produce the most possible in the least amount of time. A home business owner must do his best to minimize distractions and maximize self-discipline, and thus he will become a reliable home business.

The successful home business will market itself as a reliable business. However, no matter how reliable a business claims to be, it will prove its reliability most through the client's positive word of mouth. The home business must prove itself first, and then it will gain a rock-solid reputation which likens itself to that teacher with the glare and grandma with her cookies.

Risky Business

Some of our earliest and more pleasant memories of Tom Cruise consist of him sliding across a woodgrain floor in tube socks, briefs, and a button-up dress shirt. This is truly Risky Business. In the film, Cruise opens his own home business after an unfortunate incident with his traveling father's Porsche. While the business has morally corrupt features, Cruise's character clearly portrays the risky business involved with any home business.

The biggest risk when opening a home business revolves around inexperience. Nearly all home business owners lack specific home business experience. However, most have transferable experience. They have the potential to take the lessons they've learned from the traditional work force or from their former job and apply those principles to the home business. Some forget to transfer these skills purposefully, and others just do it automatically. For example, a stay-at-home mom used to organizing her life around her kids will automatically take this skill into her new home business. However, a traditional office worker may bask in the freedom of working from home at first and thus forget about the personal discipline that led him to success in the traditional work force. Experience matters.

Many desire to come home to work or stay at home and earn a living, but few understand the risk involved with sacrifice. In fact, few understand the sacrifices altogether. They do not understand that when a person chooses to work at home and begin a home business, he must genuinely work.

Those who succeed at home understand that while they gain a great thing, the opportunity to spend time with family and to be their own boss, they fail to recognize the sacrifice of self-discipline required for success at home. They must set boundaries such as office hours and then stick to them.

Then when their business fails or starts to lose money, they end up losing the one most valuable monetary item they have and have to find a different place to live. They upset the harmony of their home as a whole.

Certainly the home business carries great risks. But if those who engage in home business work recognize those risks and then work to minimize them, they will find themselves breathing a lot easier as they turn the lights off to their office at night and take ten steps to the dining room to eat dinner with their families. Turning a Part Time Passion into a Full Time Career . . . at Home

The day Joe quit his job was the day his paycheck stopped coming. It only seems logical to those of us looking on that Joe would no longer receive a steady paycheck if he no longer works a steady job. And then once you have those figures in your budget and you make that budget work, take the plunge. Quit your job and come home to work.

Before you can have a successful home based business, you must first possess 3 "intangibles." These are things that must come from WITHIN you.

 ===> Intangible 1 <===

First,you must have a strong WHY.

Why MUST you have a successful home business? What is driving you? What is it that you CAN'T have in your life anymore and/or what is it that you absolutely MUST HAVE now?

For me, I couldn't stand working 12+ hours a day anymore and missing the experience of my children growing up. I also absolutely HAD TO HAVE the freedom of being able to control my life and finances through a little box (laptop computer) that I could carry with me anywhere in the world and not be tied to anyone's time pressures or demands but my own. That was my carrot and my stick. I felt a great pain deep in my gut of missing out on my children's lives and the incredible freedom that succeeding in a home based business would provide for me. I found my why. You MUST find yours.

You must BELIEVE that it is possible.

If you don't believe that it's POSSIBLE for you to have a successful home based business or make your living from home, you won't. It's that simple.

For me, figuring out that it was possible was just a matter of realizing that many other people were ALREADY making great money working from home. If they could do it, I could too. It would just be a matter of figuring out what those people were doing and then adapting it to my situation.

The lesson here is that you will never really be READY to start a home based business. You simply have to start one. It's like having children... You're never really ready, but when it happens you adapt and grow and therefore you succeed. This is what I call: "Making the Leap"!

In the "brick and mortar" world you need to evaluate things very carefully before you decide to open up a business.
