How to set business goals you’ll actually stick to

Tell me, did you make any New Year’s Resolutions?

How to set business goals you'll actually stick to

I hope not.

Probably not what you were expecting me to say was it?

I get it.

Right now we’re in the midst of the “Great Resolution.”

That time of year where everyone sets goals and vows that “this year will be different.”

Yet the reality is, most people drop their New Year’s Resolutions as quick as they create them.

That’s because most people:

1. Set “pie in the sky” goals. (Something that they’ve never actually accomplished before… but something they “hope” or “want” to accomplish.)

Weight loss is a great example. Many people say “I want to lose 35 lbs” even though they’ve never managed to lose 10.

2. They don’t map out the steps to get there.

Here’s an example.

Let’s say you own a blog and want to write more content.

It’s no good setting the goal to write 10 blog posts a day if you can only write 5. (Pie in the sky goal.)

So first you need to know what YOUR level of productivity is. (Not what someone else is achieving. For this year to really be different, you need stop comparing yourself to others and instead compare yourself to YOU.)

Knowing this, you decide that instead of writing 10 posts per day, you will spend 3 hours on your business, five days per week.

And from past experience, you also know that it takes one hour to research, write and polish a short 400 word blog post.

So by simply reframing your goal to three hours per day and focusing on THAT… which is very achievable and realistic, you could create 780 blog posts.

In only one year!

That’s incredible.

I only use the blog example to get your head thinking.

So what game plan are you going create?

Here’s your challenge:

Set yourself goals for the year.

Write down what you want to accomplish including hours you will dedicate to your business.

1 week : ______
2 weeks : ______
3 weeks : ______
1 month : ______
2 months : ______
3 months : ______
6 months : ______
12 months : ______
2 years : ______
5 years : ______

Yep, it’s a sizable piece of work.

Yet I’m guessing that the past 5 years for you have probably been relatively the same.

Same level of fitness. (Or lack thereof)

Same level of income. (Or lack thereof)

Same amount of vacation days. (Or lack thereof)

Yet, if you sit down and plot this out, you’ll have a complete road map for the year and beyond.

Very few people ever make it to the top of Mt. Everest.

And the #1 reason is lack of preparation.

People fly in from all over the world and think they can just hike up, check it off their bucket list, and then hike back down.

So do the challenge.

And if you get a bit stuck, call your coach. That’s what they are there for.

After you’ve set some realistic goals, post your 3 month goal in the Facebook page and announce it to the world.

We’re here to support you.

All of us.

Together, let’s make 2017 your best year ever.

See you at the top,

How to get more stuff done in 2017

Well, we’ve come to the end of 2016.

How to get more stuff done in 2017

Went quick, didn’t it?

I hope that you’ve had a great year.

One thing that I love to do in December, is reflect on the past year.

I’ll sit in my office, close the door and journal about my wins, opportunities and how to make next year even better.

I like to call it “reflect, review and revamp.”

By looking at previous shortfalls and improving them, I can improve my productivity.

First up is Reflect.

Here you write the facts of the year.

  • What actions did you take in your business?
  • How much time did you dedicate to it?

This could’ve been anything that moved your business forward: writing blog posts, learning the material or creating ads. Anything.

Next up is Review.

Here is where you reflect on your results.

  • What worked well?
  • What didn’t go to plan?
  • Did you accomplish your goals?
  • Why? Why not?

And lastly, Revamp.

Does something stand out about your results?

Did you identify any patterns about the year?

What productive habits can you put in place based on your behavior from 2016?

Now that you’re armed with the wins and opportunities of 2016, what are you going to do different? (Remember that your coach can help out here!)

It’s amazing what impact this simple 20 minute exercise can have on your next year.

Take the challenge.

Reflect, review, revamp and see what nuggets of gold you discover about your habits, behaviors and actions.

See you at the top of a Very Happy New Year,

Michael Force
