Do you operate a home inventory business that requires you to carry a large amount of inventory? If your home is cluttered it can cause you and your family a lot of stress. Organizing your home business inventory is not only imperative to keeping your sanity, but can greatly increase your productivity as well.
Start by separating your office supplies from your inventory. With a home business you will need separate spaces to complete different tasks. You need a large desk space to track your paperwork and complete any computer work that may need to be done.
Your files should also be close by. You should create files for each customer as well as files to track the money you have coming and going. If you have a lot of files, you can even create a database on your computer that numbers each file and has a description of what is located in the file with the corresponding number.
Your computer should also have an accounting program that is easy to use and allows you to run simple financial reports that track the status of your business.
Ideally, you need a second space for your home inventory business to store all of your inventory. This should be organized by product and also by size. You could start with a closet in your office and make floor to ceiling shelves to allow for more storage space. Store the larger items on the bottom and smaller items on top. All like products should be stored together so that they are easy to find. Keep a separate shelf for shipping supplies.
The objective is to have everything organized and easy to find. You want to be able to fill orders and get products ready to ship as quickly as possible. If you have enough space in your office, you may also consider putting an additional table in there that is large enough to prepare products for shipping. This way if you have an extensive order to fill, you will have plenty of space to do it in.
All home businesses need to be organized in order to function properly, but running a home inventory business can get very hectic and you don’t normally have much space to work with. The limited space is not an excuse to not organize your home business office, but more the reason you SHOULD be organized. The more comfortable you are in your home office and the more organized it is the more productive and successful you will be.
